Brentwood
Rooted in the Pacific Northwest Brentwood shopping center has been undergoing a transformation into a more contemporary experience. The following studies looked to redefine the shopping mall experience into something befitting luxury tenants while bringing combating the noise and chaos of the typical mall.
concept 01: woodland retreat
elements: natural / airy / crisp / calm
fg 1. Inspiration imagery, calm and complex.
fg 2. Concept sketch showcasing a meandering tile and canopy scheme, with prominent plant-life connecting lower and upper levels.
fg.3 Reflected Ceiling Plan
fg 4. Lighting fixture
fg. 5 Bonsai Mounds, sculpted elements of nature.
Sculpture seating
An alternative to the bonsai mounds were the Feature Nest and Feature Pods. Sculptural semi-enclosed spaces housing organically shaped soft seating, surround by lush plants to provide a calm reprise from the shopping experience.
concept 02: metropolitan gallery
elements: contemporary / bold / textural / sophisticated
fg 1. inspiration imagery, inviting and warm minimalism.
fg 2.Concept sketch showcasing a tensile secondary ceiling, warm metals with textural patterning, and seating that combines leisure with curated plant life.
Exhibits
As the concept grew areas were allocated for showcasing local sculpture and art, with more minimal seating options and urns for plants. The shopping center could allow for more than just a shopping experience, allowing for a more public platform for artwork with the protection of being indoors. This concept looked to blend art gallery with shopping experience, while retaining function and comfort.
fg 4. Reflected Ceiling Plan
fg 4. Example of a back-lit tensile fabric used to softly illuminate an art gallery.
fg 5. Section and plan showing the height and framing of the secondary ceiling.
fg 6. The center court centerpiece is a large glowing cube, a minimalist expression of the large open space. Inspiration above showcases the material being used to create a glowing object suspended in space. Color changing lights could allow for seasonal or time of day changes in brightness, color, and tone.
planter benches
Large scale wooden islands floating between storefronts inspired by modern park furniture. These benches would also incorporate sofa seating for longer stays and areas for planters. They are situated above accent tiles, to help them feel like islands of rest from the flow of the shopping center.
