Floating Deck

Ann Arbor // MI

Moored in the rear of this Michigan subdivision home is the owner’s summer gardening and entertaining nexus. The docking misalignment allows for light to reach the newly renovated basement. Views from the basement are through a grove of structural steel pipes. The slender steel beams are misaligned and angled with care to evoke the feeling of the underside of a pier. A structural wall doubles as a planter for addtional green space, and larger steel poles allow for hanging lights to float above.

The underside of an ocean pier was used as inspiration for the legs of the Floating Deck. The nautical theme allowed for play in load distribution and aesthetic. The view from the basement windows is also improved, as more thin legs allow for more viewability and natural lighting.
