Water Street

Ypsilanti // MI

Water St. sits alongside the Huron River in the growing town of Ypsilanti. Recently more young adults and creatives have begun moving in and remolding the culture as a response to the growing rent crisis in Ann Arbor. This proposal seeks to curate an enriching culture within Ypsilanti, providing a space for restaurants, gardening, commerce and a place to call home. The apartment complex faces the river and allows a view for each occupant. The structure is held up by pilotis, providing a space below for parking and a window for both the sounds and view of the flowing water.

The Huron River is 130 miles long, running from the Huron Swamp through Ypsilanti and eventually ending in Lake Erie. The river is a popular spot for aquatic activities like kayaking, tubing, and fishing. The river flows at a steady pace, filling the proposal site with a refreshing smell and ambiance. We wanted to allow each resident a way to immerse themselves in the Huron, and curate a stronger connection to the local nature

residential:

The housing is composed of a series of stacked apartments, both single rooms and family units, each with a balcony that opens to the river below, and views to the commercial zone. The energy is handled by a series of solar panels held above the complex.

retail:

Ypsilanti has a growing young adult culture, but many of the new residents travel to nearby towns for shopping. Recent developments have started taking advantage of this new population, but this project seeks to provide a more urban experience within the towns core.

greenhouse:

Farmers markets and local foods have become a ressurging interest within american culture. Food co-ops and community gardens provide a sense of community and healthier eating options with more convenience. A greenhouse can allow for space for community gardens for the residents who lack a garden and also provide fresh vegetables for the restaurants below.
